A 5D warped Anti-de-Sitter bulk solves the hierarchy problem via exponential warping.

In one sentence

Our universe is a 3-brane in a 5D Anti-de-Sitter bulk. The exponential warp factor explains why gravity is so weak.

The claim

Randall and Sundrum proposed in 1999 that our universe is a 3-brane embedded in a 5D Anti-de-Sitter bulk. In their first model (RS1), there are two branes: a "Planck brane" with positive tension and a "TeV brane" with negative tension, separated along the extra dimension.

The warp factor, an exponential function of position in the extra dimension, generates an enormous hierarchy between the Planck scale (gravity) and the electroweak scale (everything else). This is the proposed solution to the hierarchy problem: gravity appears weak on our brane because we are far from where it is concentrated.

The family stance

A higher-dimensional spacetime, the bulk, with its own geometry. Different variants propose different bulk structures.

Predictions

  • Gravity weakens at very short distances (sub-millimeter scale)
  • Kaluza-Klein graviton modes at TeV scale
  • Specific signatures at high-energy colliders

Evidence

  • Elegant solution to hierarchy problem
  • Closely connected to AdS/CFT correspondence
  • Theoretically well-motivated within string theory
  • Sengupta (2023) constructs a single-positive-tension RS II brane model that recycles indefinitely through non-singular bounces, removing big-bang and big-rip singularities from the braneworld picture.

Counterpoints

  • No KK gravitons or short-distance gravity deviations seen at LHC
  • Original RS1 requires fine-tuning

RS1 has metric ds² = e^(-2k|y|) η_μν dx^μ dx^ν + dy², where y is the extra-dimensional coordinate. The exponential warp factor compresses scales: a Planck-scale physics on the y=0 brane appears as TeV-scale physics on the y=L brane.

The hierarchy m_EW/m_Pl ~ e^(-kL) is exponentially small for modestly large kL ~ 40. This is the natural-explanation of the gauge hierarchy problem.

RS2 has a single brane at the boundary of semi-infinite AdS₅. Gravity is localized on the brane via the warp factor without compactification.
