In one sentence

The Acoustic Big Bang proposes that large-scale structure in our universe originated from massive primordial sound waves resonating in the early universe.

The claim

The cosmic microwave background carries a specific pattern of temperature fluctuations that correspond to acoustic oscillations in the very early universe. Inflation's account of these features is that they originate as quantum fluctuations of an inflaton field, stretched to cosmological scales by the inflationary expansion. The Acoustic Big Bang takes a different view: the primordial fluctuations are not quantum but classical, and they are physically driven by sound waves in a dense plasma rather than by inflationary expansion.

In the strongest forms of the proposal, the universe never went through an inflationary phase at all. The cosmic structure we observe (galaxy clusters, voids, CMB anisotropies) arose from the dynamics of a primordial plasma in which sound waves propagated and produced regions of higher and lower density. As the universe cooled and matter decoupled from radiation, these density variations became the seeds of structure.

This is less developed than inflation as a complete cosmological framework. It is more often presented as a possible explanation for specific features of cosmic structure than as a full alternative to inflation. The model is most credible when treated as a supplement to or perturbation of standard cosmology rather than a complete replacement.

The family stance

A different physical mechanism in the early universe produced the same observable features that inflation is invoked to explain. The pre-Big Bang state varies by variant, but none of these models require an inflationary phase.

Predictions

  • Different statistics of large-scale structure than inflation predicts
  • Specific correlation patterns in the CMB that distinguish acoustic origin from quantum origin
  • No need for a scalar inflaton field

Evidence

  • Avoids the conceptual problems of inflation (initial conditions, fine-tuning of the inflaton potential)
  • Provides an intuitive physical mechanism for the formation of cosmic structure

Counterpoints

  • Inflation has accumulated extensive observational support
  • The Acoustic Big Bang is less developed mathematically than inflation
  • Distinguishing observational signatures are subtle and have not been confirmed
  • Mainstream cosmologists generally view inflation as the better-established framework

The Acoustic Big Bang concept connects to longstanding work on baryon acoustic oscillations, which are well-established features of the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure. The strong form (replacing inflation entirely) is less developed than the weak form (supplementing inflation).

Several authors have proposed variants of acoustic cosmology, often emphasizing different aspects: the role of pressure waves in matter, the relationship between sound speed and structure formation, or alternative mechanisms for amplifying small initial fluctuations.

This proposal sits at the boundary of mainstream cosmology and speculative alternatives. Its weak form (acoustic processes contributing to structure formation alongside inflation) is uncontroversial; its strong form (acoustic processes replacing inflation entirely) is much more speculative.
